Alpha Matrix

Game Changing Well Technology Using Electromagnetics

A project the first of its kind to be introduce to the oil and gas world. The program led by a group of world class researchers aim to change the way conventional EOR works with an improved way of recovering oil and gas trapped beneath the earth.

BACKGROUND

A “Game Changing Solution” summaries the idea behind the Alpha Matrix project. The project originated from the principal of electromagnetism which has a long outstanding track record under the research of Professor Dr. Noorhana Yahya from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. The project was agreed upon between Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd. which focusing on creating the first ever electromagnetic (EM) transmitting well which will change the environment in the oil and gas industry significantly.

The electromagnetics (EM) transmitting well will be proposed as the energy source. In order to be in the forefront of the technology in advanced process and a “Game Changing” concept and approach in WD while being realistic in the cost to the targeted application, a process optimization exercise will be implemented. The program covers quantum- and wave-mechanics effect in providing the emerging solution.

The project is led by Professor Dr. Noorhana Yahya as the program leader and assisted by Dr. A’fza Shafie as the program co-leader. The program focusses on four main aspects which covers;

  • EM Wave Propagation and Petro-physics Studies to determine Absorption Coefficient of a Subsurface

  • Development of materials matrix through impedance matching technique for modification of IFT using EM

  • EM Control of Oil Flow Infused with Alpha Matrix Nanofluid

  • Development of Process Optimization Model

These crucial aspects are divided into projects which are led by four project leaders who will oversee the progress of the project milestone and deliverables which will determine the success of the Alpha Matrix program.
